THE GEOLOGY OF TRUST (AUGUST 2013)
while living in NYC, i would often escape the city by roaming the museum of natural history for hours. my favorite area was the hall of gems and minerals. before its 2021 remodeling, the hall felt damp and old. heavy carpet covered most surfaces, which deadened the air like a sound booth. the dim atmosphere was interrupted by narrow spotlights, illuminating a vast collection of bizarre, colorful crystals.
one of my favorite “artist dates” (see julia cameron’s The Artist’s Way) was when i came here alone to sketch. i had a blast choosing my favorite minerals and assigning them ridiculous powers. i eventually turned it into the comic above.
to this day, i get deep and interesting art-feelings from strange minerals. it’s unsurprising to me that for most of recorded history, humans have thought that they must possess strange powers.
